Inside a Vintage Steam Iron
Dissecting a MAGEFESA steam iron from the 80’s and building it back together, all while understanding how it works from the inside out, and visually representing the role of each individual piece that makes it whole.
Deliveries
The deliveries of the "Home Appliance Object Analysis" project include a blueprint of the axonometric and exploded views, a usability diagram, and an IKEA-style construction manual on how to build the steam iron from beginning to end.
It is an exercise that allows for the exploration of engineering within product design, and encourages the absolute understanding of the history of mundane objects.
“It was especially interesting to complete the project with a vintage item such as the Magefesa Steam Iron because it's not in production anymore; therefore, all the information acquired for the project was taken from a few scarce old magazines found online. The drawings in the construction manuals and usability diagram were completed through the process of taking apart the steam iron, individually photographing all its parts, and later drawing them and building the model digitally in a way that was digestible for the viewer to understand its inner manufacturing.”
